La liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina

The Liberation of Ruggiero from the Island of Alcina

by Carter Family Marionettes with live musical ensemble and professional opera singers

Pesented April 20-29, 2007

The Medici Court celebrated the visit of Prince Wladislaw of Poland with the premier at Villa Poggio Imperiale in Florence. "The Liberation of Ruggiero" is Francesca Caccini's sole surviving opera and is noted in music history as the first opera composed by a woman. Libretto by Ferdinando Saracinelli draws from Canto VI of Ludovico Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso" first published in 1516. This performance features a prologue by Neptune, the seductive spells of Alcina the sorceress, a chorus of enchanted plants, an army of monsters and the romance between the valiant North African knight Ruggiero and the French warrior maiden Bradamante.

An exciting opportunity to see for yourself the latest baroque opera by Carter Family Marionettes. Their marionette operas have thrilled audiences and received critical acclaim in Seattle, San Francisco and Berlin! They are joined by some of the finest musicians and singers specializing in early music.
