THE DRAGON OF WANTLEY

by Carter Family Marionettes

Presented in May of 2004

"The Dragon of Wantley" created a sensation when it premiered 267 years ago in London. John Frederick Lampe's mastepiece of 1737 was such a success that it held the stage at Covent Garden for nearly 50 years! In his parody of Italian opera, Lampe combined deadpan Handelian music with comically ryhmed libretto by Henry Carey. Gubbins, the country squire, his lovely daughter Margery, brave Moore of Moore Hall and the ferocious singing dragon are all brought to life by Seattle's renowned impresarios of the puppet world, Carter Family Marionettes.
